biographySalomé is a proud Ecuadorian mestiza, an actor, dancer, activist, translator and arts educator. She obtained her Bachelor’s degree from Skidmore College in Dance and Theater (US, 2014), attended the “Shakespeare Programme” at the British American Drama Academy (UK, 2012); and obtained a Master’s degree from NYU Gallatin, focusing her studies in International Education, Mythology and Performing Arts (US, 2018). Last year, Salomé was a fellow of Hemispheric Institute’s Emerging Artist Program for Political Performance, EmergeNYC. Salomé’s works aim to combine her passion for the performing arts and social justice with the goal of helping her Latinx and many other immigrant communities to heal from the pain and traumas created by uprootedness and alienation through applied dance and theater. Recently she has been exploring the themes of radical self-love and indigenization as tools to empower the ancestral knowledge that bodies of color carry with them.
She currently works as a Teaching Artist for Girl Be Heard! and Spotlight Kids NYC; has previously worked for Bank Street School and the EarSay Youth Voices Program at the International High School. As her personal mission, Salomé fights to empower the voices of the womxn of color through her theater ensemble, FUN Collective (Fierce, Untamed Niñas). She has performed nationally in venues such as: Abrons Arts Center, Nuyorican Poets Cafe, LaMama, Dixon Place, New York Theatre Workshop, University Settlement Theater, Martha Graham Studios, Elsewhere NYC, The Elektra Theater and Joe’s Pub at The Public Theater. Internationally, she has performed in several venues and festivals across Ecuador, Venezuela, Cuba and Argentina as a lead dancer and soloist with Ballet Nacional Integrado del Ecuador (BNI). When not performing, Salomé dedicates her extra time to develop her clothing brand, Bruja Feminism -a brand designed to empower and honor the aesthetics of Ecuadorian Indigenous craftsmanship. |

SEPTEMBER 6th, 2019 - BANHO DE DESCARREGO
“Banho de Descarrego” is a Brazilian performance that stages the removal of fascist ideologies and practices from the social body through the public washing of painted bodies covered in swastikas. As a political intervention, the action seeks to provoke poetic and critical estrangement in public space, enacting resistance to the far right’s discriminatory, neo-fascist policies in Brazil under President Bolsonaro, in the US under President Trump, and around the globe.
Conceived by artists/professors Marcelo Denny and Marcos Bulhões of University of São Paulo, this action was performed in the city of Natal, Brazil, in October 2018. The title refers to a ritual bath that washes away negative energies—a practice that is widespread in Brazilian popular culture.
